Basal Reinforcement of RailwayEXPLANATION

  • Concept

Applying both ACEGrid® and ACETex® to the foundation of a railway or roadway to achieve separation, filtration, drainage, and reinforcement purposes. This application prevents cross-contamination between the ballast and soil; Moreover, it improves the bearing capacity and reduces the level of differential settlement.
  • Application

    Foundation of railway and roadway.
  • Characteristics

    1. Improving the stability of the basal structure.
    2. Excellent permeability.
    3. Less maintenance in the future.

Basal Reinforcement of RailwayCONSTRUCTION PROCESS

  • Ballast Laying

Lay the ballast layer to the designed height.

  • ACETex® Laying

Lay ACETex® on top of the ballast for separation and filtration purposes.

  • ACEGrid® Laying

Lay ACEGrid® to support the lateral thrust from the train and thereby relieves the outward shear stress to maintain the bearing capacity of the foundation.

  • Sleeper and Rail Laying

Lay sleepers and rails with specifications mentioned on the designed drawing.

  • Ballast Filling

Fill ballast around and between sleepers. Make sure the ballast layer is leveled with sleepers and compacted.

Basal Reinforcement of RailwayDemonstrative Case

Use of ACETex® in Treatment of Railway Subgrade, New Taipei City, Taiwan

Passengers’ safety was endangered due to the phenomenon of sand boiling, the impending problem of differential settlement in rail base and rail distortion. The solution was to lay layers of woven geotextile (ACETex®PP), geogrid (ACEGrid®) and nonwoven geotextile between the subgrade and blast layer. ACETex® was embedded to obstruct the upward movement of subgrade fines. ACEGrid® was embedded to enhance the bearing capacity of subgrade and to prevent the problem of differential settlement. And a layer of nonwoven geotextile was covered on ACETex® to protect it from the abrasion of ballast. The use of geosynthetics not only successfully fix the problem cost-effectively, but also extend the railway’s service duration.
